Insulation

Why Insulate

Home insulation is used to reduce heat gain (cooling season) and heat loss (heating season). Top Quality insulation, properly installed, keeps your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Studies show what we all know to be true. Air Conditioning and Heating are a major component of the homes monthly utilities. Clearly, this makes your insulation selection one of the most important energy investments you can make.

By insuring that your attic has the recommended R. value of insulation you can reduce your utility electrical consumption costs. The purpose of the insulation is to reduce the transfer time of heat from your attic area to the conditioned space.

A law of science is that heat always transfers from a warmer area to an area which is cooler. This heat transfer takes place in every home regardless of age or construction. The important point is the rate of transfer. If you are able to slow-down the rate of heat transfer by adding more insulation you will accomplish these three important steps.

1st The air conditioning system will cycle less frequently thereby reducing the run time of the A/C system, and save valuable Dollars $$$ on electrical expenses.

2nd When the A/C cycles less this means that the area being cooled is maintaining the thermostat set-point for longer intervals. This means that there is less fluctuation (up & down) of the indoor temperature. The bottom line is a greater degree of indoor comfort experienced with a more constant indoor temperature.

3rd With less cycling of the air-condition system you are prolonging the life of youre A/C system. With less compressor starts and stops the equipment life is extended.

An increase in the R. Value will provide Enhanced Energy Conservation. Insulation is rated in terms of thermal resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value the greater the insulating effectiveness. In the greater Houston and surrounding areas (Zone 4) the recommended attic insulation minimum is R.38 Insulation

Cellulose achieves an R.38 value in only 10.6. Cellulose is a better inhibitor of heat as compared to fiberglass. Glass fibers do not block radiant heat as well as cellulose fibers. Cellulose also acts as a sound barrier to reduce sound transfer from outside the home. It has been tested extensively and carries the Underwriters Laboratories label.

Cellulose Insulation:

The following are benefits of Cellulose Insulation:

Reduces Air Conditioning and Heating Cost
Resist Mold and Mildew
Treated for insects Insect resistant
Naturally Safe
Environmentally green
Doesnt Itch
Reduces Noise
Fire Resistant

See the graph below which illustrates how insulation works:

(Summer)

This illustration depicts the cool room as the insulated room (ceiling and walls). The room beside it has no insulation - therefore heat transfers rapidly and the room becomes hot.

(Winter)

This illustration depicts the warm room as the insulated room (ceiling and walls). It is maintaining the set-point temperature of the thermostat. The room beside it has no insulation therefore the room looses its heated value, and the temperature drops to an undesirable temperature.

Although most homes have some attic insulation the average home has insufficient insulation. CenterPoint recommends a minimum of R.38 10.6 of attic insulation.
